Enjoy. 09/01/09 Single Molecule Imaged for the First Time Ever For those not in the know, a group of researchers has for the first time ever obtained an image of a single molecule. The same group that measured the charge of a single atom. It's insane what they're capable of doing, this group really pushed the limits with AFM and using a Carbon Monoxide tip to detect differences in vibrations. The images are pretty cool too. 09/01/09 Case of the Missing Russian Ship gets Bizzare...er Just when I thought people stealing a ship load of timber was hilarious. It turns out there are reports circulating that the ship was carrying a more dubious cargo....missiles head for Iran. And that the Hijackers were really hired by Israeli agents to investigate (the 1st reported hijacking) and then return to swipe the cargo (2nd reported hijacking). Apparently the Russian Navy/Military are not doing themselves any favors as they seek to explain the situation. I know that stealing a cargo of timber was fishy  but this was plain confusing.
08/13/09 Will your mobile phone become your wallet? Well I've talked about this with people before. It's actually becoming more common outside of the U.S. I like the idea of less things to carry, which is why I've always been a fan of the Nokia phones with the 5mp cameras and 16/32gb of memory. The less stuff you need, the better. However, dropping your wallet in the toliet may become more common, and then you're really screwed. 08/13/09 Obama Warns of Health Care Scare Tactics Health care is a weird topic. Especially when you talk about government expanded coverage to provide for the poor. At my roots I'm a Republican, but to some extent I understand the need for basic coverage for all people. I think one of the main problems in this country arises from our own principles. People are free in this country, you may do whatever you want. As a result you can eat whatever you want, you can smoke, drink, and do stupid things. I'm not partial to the idea that someone who's smoked a pack a day for 20 years could get free coverage for something like lung cancer. Let's be honest, the person made that choice. However, I hate seeing people who are healthy not receive coverage. I guess what I'd like to see if we're going to extend free coverage would be a yearly physical to make sure people are living healthy in order to receive free care. In other words if you're smoking tons of cigarettes the gov't shouldn't be responsible for picking up the tab for your smoking related illness. That would be your own problem since you made a free choice to make it your problem fulling knowing the effects. I'd like to see some sort of restriction enactment for coverage. If you eat mcdonalds everyday the gov't shouldn't be responsible for your triple bypass. However, I think healthy people who lead somewhat healthy lives should be entitled to some sort of basic coverage. So long as you pass your yearly physical you get to keep all your coverage. That is the very least the gov't could do, and maybe, just maybe it would allow us all to live a healthier life. 08/13/09 Mystery deepens over disappearing merchant ship So I was reading this story on Reuters, and I thought it was kind of comical. Apparently a Maltese trading vessel disappeared in the Atlantic with no trace after armed men were reported to board the ship. That part...not so funny, however the ships cargo? $1.3Mn worth of Timber. If this ship truly was hijacked by pirates off the coast of France, how angry do you suppose they were when they found out the ship they hijacked had a bunch of tress on board? When did pirates take such a wrong turn and decide it was time to hold wood hostage? UPDATE Missing Ship Found They've located the ship off the coast of Africa. The ship originally disappeared after going through the English Channel. Apparently the ship had been attacked in Swedish waters by a group of masked men disguised as drug trafficking agents. Later those men left, and the ship went through the Channel with no problems. What a cluster fuck of weird. |
